Foot care : prevention and treatments
Plantar Warts
Plantar warts are superficial lesions of the skin caused by different forms of the virus of the same family as the human papillomavirus. They are formed when the skin comes in contact with an infected surface (often in a public place where you walk barefoot, like the pool). The virus can also be contracted by sharing a contaminated object, such as a plantar rasp or nail file.
In order to treat the wart, the podiatrist locally applies an acidic medicine (the Canthacur). He can also perform a subcutaneous injection of bleomycin, an antibiotic.
Corns (calluses or hyperkeratosis)
Corns are bumps made of dead skin. They can be deep and sensitive to pressure. The majority of corns are found in places that are frequently under pressure (between the toes, on the heel, beneath the metatarsals, etc.)
To heal a corn, the podiatrist will remove the dead skin and prescribe moisturizing creams to be applied locally. For prevention, the podiatrist will make recommendations concerning, among other things, the purchase of suitable shoes.
Athlete's foot (tinea pedis)
- maceration between the toes
- peeling skin or blisters between the toes or under the feet
- severe itching
The podiatrist treats athlete’s foot by prescribing drugs to treat mycosis or itching. Your podiatrist will also provide several tips on how to prevent recurrence.
Excessive sweating
Several factors can cause excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, such as genetic factors, stress, menopause, hyperthyroidism and hypoglycemia.
Moisture created by excessive sweating of the feet and the gradual development of bacteria in the shoes can cause a foul-smelling odour called hydrobromide.
In order to treat hyperhidrosis, the podiatrist prescribes medications against sweating and recommends helpful ways to prevent hyperhidrosis.
Plantar fasciitis
This is the inflammation of the ligament which joins the heel to the toes (the plantar fascia).
Typical early symptoms are pain when the foot is placed on the ground after a prolonged period of rest such as getting out of bed in the morning.
The pain will gradually disappear after a few steps.
